2020 Recap

2020 has been eventful to say the least. As we near the end of the year, it is often helpful to look back on all the good, and the bad, to help make the new year better.

There were definitely some big moments that happened this year, one being the Dodgers winning the World Series for the first time since 1988. This moment was one Dodger fans have been anxiously anticipating for the last four years, as this year was the Dodgers’ third time in the World Series since 2017. This year, the Dodgers won against the Tampa Bay Rays. Los Angeles residents could not be prouder. In addition to the Dodgers winning on a national scale, so did the Lakers! Sports-wise, Los Angeles did amazing this year.

While Los Angeles might have experienced some wins in terms of sports, it has not experienced many wins in terms of Covid-19. The Los Angeles Unified School District has remained 100% online due to the number of Covid cases not reaching the threshold needed to start hybrid learning. Many students have begun to feel unmotivated and unengaged in their classes since staring at a computer all day is simply exhausting. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as several of the Covid-19 vaccines will start being distributed by early 2020. Because of Covid-19, many seniors (myself included) wonder what our future holds. Will we get the moments we’ve looked forward to all of our time in high school? Will we get prom? Will we get to walk the stage with all of our friends? Will we be able to tour the colleges we are looking at? Time will only tell.

In the beginning of quarantine, I know many people baked quite a bit. As we near the holiday season and baking makes its comeback, I have been making lots of treats for my family and friends to enjoy. One recipe which is easy to make and always a big hit is cookie dough. For this recipe that makes two servings, you will need ¼ cup packed brown sugar, ⅛ teaspoon of salt, 6 tablespoons of flour (bake for five minutes at 350 degrees to kill any bacteria in the flour), 1 tablespoon chocolate chips, 2 tablespoons of milk, ⅛ teaspoon vanilla, and 2 tablespoons of butter. I usually combine all the dry and wet ingredients separately, then add the softened butter and wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.

One other major part of 2020 was the election. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris ran as the Democratic Party’s ticket, while Donald Trump and Mike Pence ran as the Republican Party’s ticket. After many unusual debates, one involving a fly, Joe Biden was declared winner with 306 electoral college votes. Donald Trump lost with 232 electoral college votes. Joe Biden’s win marks history, as Kamala Harris is the first woman and biracial vice president. Now, girls and people of color can see someone who resembles them in the White House, which brings hope to a whole new generation of people.

To say 2020 was history making would be an understatement. Now, as 2020 is more in the past than in the future, we can take all of the lessons we learned and bring them forward to help us succeed in 2021. As the holidays approach us, stay safe, wear a mask, and stay hopeful!
