Living in Donald Trump's America

Updated: Nov 5, 2021

Trigger warning: mentions of police brutality

2020 has been a hectic year for Americans, from the start of a global pandemic, to a race war, to the election. Everyone has felt a form of discomfort or shift in their lives. [Among various questions being asked, most revolve around going back to school, work, or some sense of normality.] With the current election coming up, we have Donald Trump, who does not acknowledge what he has done wrong, and Joe Biden, who is willing to do anything to change our current circumstances. Do you want a president that cares about the people more than the economy? Do you want the madness to come to an end? To everyone reading this, you should know the importance of voting in the 2020 election. These problems highlight the importance of voting in the November 2020 election.

Donald Trump has divided this country. He did not discuss the severity of the coronavirus to the American people. An example of one of the many lies includes how children are affected. The Atlantic states, "The claim: Children are "virtually immune" to COVID-19. The truth: The science is not definitive, but that doesn't mean children are immune. Studies in the U.S. and China suggested kids are less likely than adults to be infected and more likely to have mild symptoms, but can still spread the virus to family members and others. The CDC has stated that about 7 percent of COVID-19 cases and less than 0.1 percent of COVID-19-related deaths have occurred in children.” Throughout the months of the pandemic, Trump has fed us lies about the virus. Did you feel calm about being quarantined for months without a proper explanation of what this virus can do? Do you think Trump lied to you?

There is still not justice for Breonna Taylor nor George Floyd. In response, the thousands of Black Lives Matter protests sprouted across the country. Donald Trump has failed to protect Black lives. This President has shown how much he only cares about himself instead of addressing the ongoing issues of police violence towards Black Americans. He sent cops to tear gas and shoot rubber bullets at protesters while hiding in a bunker. Imagine seeing so many people that look like you dead in the streets. Breonna, we are so sorry a wall received more justice than you. George, we are sorry those officers took your life while you screamed for your mom. Do you want all minorities in America to feel that their life matters?

Additionally, it does not help that Donald Trump failed to address white supremacy during the Presidential Debates. During the debate, moderator Chris Wallace repeatedly asked Trump if he would condemn white supremacists. At first, Trump avoided the question by saying that he mostly sees violence from the left. The Record stated, “When Wallace persisted, Trump referenced a white supremacist group, said, "Proud Boys, stand back and stand by. But I'll tell you what: Somebody's got to do something about Antifa and the left." The President refused to condemn the violence of white nationalists. As President, he should have affirmed a common vision of a nation that can pull us all together as one to help us and escape a dark time. [He could have done that. But he chose not to.] We have a President who does not represent the needs of American people. [Do you want to have a leader that cares about ALL people?]

Finally, Donald Trump is the root cause of voters suppression during this upcoming election. He is trying to take away our voting power. For example, during the debates, he talked about how this election would be unfair due to mail-in voting. Trump even tried slowing down the mail in order to prevent or receive a ballot. According to NPR, "The Republican Party's deployment of these unofficial and deceptive ballot drop boxes was in violation of state law, and they created voter confusion...This is a thuggish voter intimidation and voter suppression tactic." What the Republican party has done is extremely unconstitutional, illegal even. We have our President and his supporters trying to cheat their way through the election. [As the American people, we are not having that.]

Finally, to the person who is reading this, I want to let you know that YOU are important. Regardless of your different intersecting identities, YOU MATTER. You have a voice. Your vote matters. You have the chance to elect a leader that genuinely cares about you. Vote everyone. Vote.
